January: New Beginnings
The first month of the year is always exciting and full of new beginnings. As an international student observing the Chinese education system, I was thrilled to join a middle-class (中班) at a local kindergarten. The children were just as excited as I was, eager to start fresh after the winter break.
One of the key focuses in January was setting goals and expectations for the new term. We spent time discussing what the children wanted to achieve and how they could improve their skills, whether it was learning to tie their shoes or improving their English vocabulary. This was a great opportunity to introduce the concept of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) in a simplified manner that young children could understand.
February: Celebrating Spring Festival
February brought one of the most significant events of the year – the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year. The atmosphere was electric as the school transformed into a sea of red and gold decorations. We engaged in various activities to celebrate the festival, including making paper cuttings, learning traditional dances, and preparing special foods like dumplings (饺子).
For many of the international students, this was their first experience with such a vibrant and culturally rich celebration. It was heartwarming to see them participate enthusiastically and gain a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture. The highlight of the month was definitely the dragon dance performance by the children, which showcased their newfound skills and cultural understanding.
March: Embracing Spring
As spring arrived, so did a renewed sense of energy and growth. March was dedicated to outdoor activities and exploring the natural world around us. We organized field trips to local parks and gardens, where the children could observe plants blooming and animals emerging from hibernation. These experiences not only provided valuable learning opportunities but also helped the children develop a love for nature.
One memorable activity was planting trees on Tree Planting Day (植树节), a national holiday celebrated on March 12th. Each child was given a sapling to plant, symbolizing their own growth and contribution to the environment. This hands-on experience taught them about responsibility and the importance of caring for our planet.
April: Exploring Nature
Building on the momentum from March, April continued the theme of nature exploration. However, this time we focused more on scientific concepts and observations. We set up a small science corner in the classroom where children could conduct simple experiments, such as growing beans in water and observing the changes over time.
Additionally, we introduced the concept of biomes through interactive storytelling and role-playing games. Children pretended to be explorers traveling through different biomes, learning about the unique flora and fauna found in each. This not only sparked their curiosity but also encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
May: Preparing for Summer
With summer fast approaching, May became a month of preparation and reflection. We reviewed the progress made throughout the academic year and discussed the skills and knowledge gained. To make learning fun, we organized a mini-Olympics event where children participated in various sports and games, promoting teamwork and healthy competition.
Another important aspect of May was preparing the children for the transition to the next class level. We held workshops for parents, providing tips on how to support their children’s learning during the summer break. This included recommendations for educational apps and resources, such as Duolingo Kids for language learning and Khan Academy Kids for math and reading practice.
Looking back on these past five months, it’s clear that each brought its own unique challenges and rewards. From setting goals to celebrating cultural traditions, every moment contributed to the children’s growth and development. For international students, experiencing these aspects of Chinese education firsthand offers invaluable insights into the country’s rich culture and educational practices.
